Brown rice through PDS

The state government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to distribute brown rice through the PDS system. The decision is taken in wake of encouraging healthy food habits in people.

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has ordered the civil supplies department to replace the white rice with brown rice gradually in the Public Distribution System shops in the state.

White rice has been spreading diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in the state, in order to free the state from these state government is planning to replace white rice with brown rice.   

The project would be implemented on pilot basis in Guntur district and based on the results the project will be extended to remaining parts of the state.
The scheme of providing rice through PDS has been started in 1983 and changed the food habits of the people. People who used to eat millets in rural areas started eating rice.

People need to go for brown rice to reduce the risk levels, as a study showed brown rice lowers risk of rising blood sugar at least by 20 percent when compared to white rice.
